“Be Opened!”

Bill Campbell was a storied player in Silicon Valley. Beloved by many, he was also known for his bluntness during the years that he served as an executive coach for the CEOs of Apple, Google, and Amazon.

Tales about Campbell’s contrarian style continue to float around the Valley today, five years after his death. A couple of those stories have application to today’s scripture passages.

Although the Tokyo Olympics have concluded, both the electrifying competitions as well as the dramas, large and small, associated with that event are still fresh in my mind. The story of one Olympic athlete in particular, however, stands out in light of today’s readings.

Dominic simply loved people. Jordan of Saxony who knew him well, wrote: “Everybody was enfolded in the wide embrace of his charity, and since he loved everyone, everyone loved him. He made it his own business to rejoice with those who were rejoicing, and to weep with those who wept. He was full of affection.” … Isn’t that how we should be?

In chatting about faith with others, I am amazed how often faith is opposed to reason.
