Please join the Stanford Catholic Film Group to discuss La Strada. This Federico Fellini film won the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar in 1957, and stars Anthony Quinn, Giulietta Masina (Fellini’s wife) and Richard Basehart.
La Strada was released initially in 1954, and tells the story of Gelsomina (Giulietta Masina), a simple- minded young woman bought from her mother by Zampanò (Anthony Quinn), a brutish strongman who takes her with him on the road. It was placed fourth in the 1992 British Film Institute directors’ list of cinema’s top 10 films, and has remained on that decennial list ever since. It also appears on the Vatican’s list of 45 Important Films, created in 1995. Pope Francis said “La Strada, by Fellini, is the movie that perhaps I loved the most. I identify with this movie, in which there is an implicit reference to St. Francis.” (America Magazine, Sept 30, 1993)
The film is available to watch on many platforms: see https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/la-strada to find out where.
