Please join the Stanford Film Group on October 12 for the 1984 film Cal. Based on the novella by Bernard MacLaverty, the film is about a young man on the fringes of the IRA, who falls in love with Marcella, a Catholic woman whose husband, a Protestant policeman, was killed one year earlier by the IRA. It stars Helen Mirren and John Lynch, who were both nominated for BAFTA awards for this film. Helen Mirren won Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival. Mark Knopfler composed the music.
